Leh Court

Historically, Leh (Ladakh) has been referred to by various names such as Maryul, Kia-Chha, and Ma-Lo-Pho by different cultures and travelers. The region has seen successive waves of immigration, including the Brokpas from Dadarstan and the Mons from Karja (Kulu), who settled in various parts of Ladakh.

Buddhism played a significant role in shaping Ladakh’s culture, as did Islamic influence from the early 16th century. The region was invaded and unified by rulers such as Skit Lde Nemagon and King Singge Namgyal, who constructed the iconic 9-storey Leh Palace.

In the 20th century, Ladakh faced territorial challenges, with parts being illegally occupied by Pakistan and China. However, Ladakh remained an integral part of India, eventually becoming two separate districts, Leh and Kargil, in 1979 as part of district reorganization efforts.
